寺院由緒書の内容には、例えば夢のお告げで本尊を掘り出したといった類の怪しげなものが多く、それゆえまともな歴史資料として扱われる傾向は希薄であった。寺院由緒書が虚偽の歴史叙述であることは勿論事実であろう。しかし、それがある時代に信憑性を持って受容されていたこともまた事実である。偽書・偽証がなぜ疑いなく受け入れられるのか。本稿では、瀬戸内海の小島に伝わる法然伝説を事例として検討してみた。

Most traditions of Japanese temples disagree with the historical fact. Therefore historians have not dealt with them as proper materials. Indeed, traditions include the false part. But it was also true that people in Edo period accepted them as the historical fact. Why was doubtful traditions easily believed. In this article, I take up the legend of Honen talked in a small island and try to resolve the above question.
