説明

type:text

Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde still survives for 120 years as a masterpiece of novella. It is basically a fable, dealing with man's consciousness of the good-evil duality. The story is developed interestingly enough like a mystery, and the theme is shown easily and effectively as a fable. But the characters around Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are what E. M. Forster calls 'flat' characters and are almost 'types.' Any of them will not, and cannot, see Hyde as his other self. It seems in this point that this novella is not satisfactory to present-day readers.
