Abstract

This paper sheds light on the representation of Kyoto in Gamera 3 : Revenge of Iris (1999). In section 1, I examine how giant monsters destroy Kyoto in this film, and I also examine how this film described the destruction of Kyoto on a limited scale. In section 2, I reveal common characteristics of the representation of Kyoto in the entire genre of Tokusatsu films by referring to other Tokusatsu films. In section 3, I examine what kind of the Kyoto-ness, or "Kyoto-Rashisa" filmmakers of this film had in their minds, and I also reveal the reasons why the representation of Kyoto in this film was biased. In previous studies both about the destruction of cities in Kaiju films and about the representation of Kyoto in films, the representation of Kyoto in Gamera 3 : Revenge of Iris has been scarcely mentioned. This paper is to develop arguments about the representation of Kyoto and to add new perspectives to them.
