「姿三四郎」というヒーローは、講道館柔道、日本柔道の発展とともにあたかも実在の人物であるかのように語られている。日本のヒーローとして「姿三四郎」は1942 年に小説化、19433年3月25日に映画として上映された。 「姿三四郎」のモデルは西郷四郎である。西郷四郎の神話は講道館正史を確立するためには欠かせないであろう。西郷四郎をとりあげ、実像に迫りつつその神話が生まれた当時の社会を活写することを試みたい。

The hero of the fiction "Sanshiro Sugata" is talked about with KODOKAN, development of the Judo in Japan as if it is an actual person. Sanhiro's character was based on Shiro Saigo. Shiro Saigo became a hero in Japan and was the model for the main character in Tomita Tsuneo's novel "Sugata Sanshiro". And then, this film was released in Japan on 25 March 1943 by Toho film studios. I think that the myth of Shiro Saigo is indispensable to establish KODOKAN for history of judo. I describe that the society by a real image of Shiro Saigo and the reason the myth of Shiro Saigo was created.
