With the number of the old people increasing sharply in China, people pay more and more attention to the research on the problems related to the old. However, there has been little research on the living conditions and assistance sources of the old in China. This paper is based on the survey made in Dalian, aiming to present the daily life and assistance sources of the old. At the same time, the state of assistance between the old and their children, and its reasons have been studied. The conclusions are as follows: First, the number of the old l iving alone is greater than that of the old living with their children. Among those surveyed, the old living alone account for 48.6% of all the people surveyed while the old living with their children 37.1%. Most of the old have assurance, few people have economic trouble, and more than 90% of them are satisfied with-their life.. In addition, the old take part in few social activities. Second, t he assistance sources, whether in economy, psychology or housework, largely rely on their children. Most of the surveyed think that daughters are the indispensable assistance source in their life. Third, the analysis of the survey shows that there are a number of reasons influencing the amount of assistance ,such as the gender of the old, the family register, the number of children, the past experiences of assistance, traditional gender criterion and so on.
