Abstract
type:Article
Japan's "2007 Issue," referring to the retirement of numerous baby boomers in that year, exposed the problems involving retirees to the whole nation. Countless, ever-aging retirees now have to find new models to live by. However, researchers of retirement still hold on to the research framework presented in the 1970s. No critical study of retirement has been conducted since then. This paper aims to discuss issues with future retirement studies of Japan by comparing studies and systems of retirement with those of the US. Unlike that of the US, Japan's retirement system involves ageism and therefore pushes many retirees into an identity crisis. Japan, therefore, has developed its own field of research in identity crises faced by many retirees. However, many retirement researchers in the nation have so far failed to recognize the relationship between "retirement ageism" and such identity crises. Thus, in the years to come, these researchers need to have a critical view of "retirement ageism" as they study identity crises in retirees.
