In this paper, I would like to discuss the use of wood in the Nara period, 8th century A.D .. It is known that the "ritsryo" system was established from the end of the 7th to the 8th century in Japan. A lot of researchers have already mentioned various changes, social I political systems under the ritsuryo code. It is also one of the important problems to understand about the distribution system of raw materials and productions. In order to approach this question, I'll focus on the supply and working of wood during the Nara period, and especially address the topic of "isunoki" (Distylium racemosum) and "yushiki" . Though the vegetation of "isunoki" is limited, mainly in the southern part of the Japanese Archipelago, Kyushu and Okinawa districts, archaeological objects made from " isunoki" were excavated from wider area. The number of objects increased after the end of the 7th century. And Shoso-in documents describes "yushiki" as raw materials for jikutan, refer to the roller ends which fit on the both ends of the axes of band scrolls. I think "yushiki" corresponds to "isunoki", therefore I'll try to consider the above subject through the use of "isunoki".
