Description
P(論文)
There is a common tendency to demonize 'the Nazi doctors' and to believe thatonly the depraved psychopaths like Mengele were able to perpetrate selections andunscrupulous experiments on human beings. This paper is intended to refute thisview with the case of Eduard Wirth who headed all the medical staff in Auschwitz. First I would like to portray his checkered achievements in the camp. As ameticulous doctor dedicated to saving lives he crusaded against typhussuccessfully, interfered with gratuitous murders by other SS men, and amelioratedthe conditions of inmate patients. In the meantime, he performed selections andfatal medical experiments on Jewish inmates without embracing eliminationistantisemitism. Secondly I will examine the ideas underlying his criminal behavior toshow that they are not limited to Nazis but are present even today in the medicalprofession and in bioethics.
