This paper aimed to demonstrate Wang Cheng-Tʼ ingʼs diplomatic attitude towards abolition of extraterritoriality. As a result, I indicated that he called for abolition of extraterritoriality in principle, and left the way open for settlement of the question on the basis of gradualism, that the extraterritoriality in China was not only a judicial and political problem but also an economic problem to Wang Cheng-Tʼ ing.Though Wang Cheng-Tʼ ing, who considered speedy abolition of extraterritoriality, he might not claim an immediate and total abolition of extraterritoriality. His tactics was a gradual and progressive abolition of extraterritoriality. So we could characterized Wang Cheng-Tʼ ingʼs diplomacy as gradualism.
