We　have　isolated　a　green　alga,　Pediastrum　biwae,　which　is　an　endemic　species in　Lake　Biwa　and　have　investigated　effects　of　environmental　conditions　on　the growth　of　this　alga. In　this　study,　we　adopted　the　total　chlorophyll(chlorophyll　a　and　b) as　anindicator　of　the　algal　mass　and　revealed　following　properties: 1)The　optimumtemperature　is　20～25℃ judging　from　the　growth　rate　and　the　morphology　of　thecolony. 2)The　luminous　intensity　becomes　saturated　about　8,000 luxes. 3)The optimum　condition　of　pH　in　the　growth　medium　is　about　8.0.　These　results　are discussed　in　relation　to　the　water　condition　during　the　period　when　Pediastrum biwae　dominates　in　Lake　Biwa.
