Effects　of　light　on　the　development　of　contractile　roots　of　gladiolus　were　studied.When　the　corms　of　gladiolus　were　planted　deeply　in　soil,　the　development　of　thecontractile　roots　were inhibited　and　the　diameter　of　the　roots　were　reduced　remarkably. The　plants　whose　shesth　leaves　were　removed　developed　the　contractile　roots　as　well　as intact　plants.　When　gladiolus　were　grown　under some　colour　light,　the　development　of　the contractile　roots　were　promoted　under　red　light　and　were　inhibited　under　blue　and　green light.　The　plants　which　had　been　interrupted　with　plasticfilm　at　base　of　leaves　were　notformed　the　contractile　roots. 　This　facts　indicated　that　the　development　of　contractile　roots　of　gladiolus　were stimulated　by　the　contractile　roots　promoters　which　were　produced　in　the　leaf　sheath under　the　light.
