日本語での「道」は交通の手段としての「道路」のみならず、「生き方」、「道徳」、「人として行うべき振舞い」まで幅広い意味領域を有する。また、「道」という言葉が「宗教」を表す比喩的・象徴的な表現として使用されることは、世界各地の諸宗教に広く見られる現象である。旧約聖書に記されている古代イスラエルでも「道」という語は幅広い意味を有しており、物理的な「道路」のみならず、人としての「生き方」や「行い」、さらにはヤハウェに従うか否かという宗教観・価値観を表す表現として使用されている。本稿では、旧約聖書で使用されている「道」という語を検討することで、古代イスラエルにおける宗教の特徴を提示したい。
The Japanese word for "path" not only refers to a "road" as a facility for travel but also covers a variety of concepts such as "a way of life," "morality," and "conduct expected of a person as a human being." The fact that the word for "path" is also used as a metaphorical and symbolic expression of "religion" is a phenomenon widely seen among many religions in the world. The word for "path" in ancient Israel recoeded in the Old Testament aiso has a wide variety of meanings ranging from a physical "road" through a "way of life" and "conduct" expected of a person as a human being even to a religious view or a value concerning whether or not one is willing to follow Yahweh.This essay discusses the word for "path" used in the old testament to identify the characteristics of religion in ancient Israel.
