Abstract

This study aims to clarify the current awareness of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) among mothers of 1-month old babies in Hokkaido, where the rate of occurrence is more than twice the national average. Questionnaires were distributed to suitable subjects during their hospitalization in the maternity wards at 5 institutions in Northern Hokkaido that had agreed to cooperate with this study and a total of 198 completed questionnaires were collected anonymously from mothers when they returned for their babies' 1-month check-ups. Questionnaire items covered three main categories : awareness of the syndrome itself, knowledge of the Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare's"SIDS Awareness Month" campaign, and personal information about the respondent. Results were totaled and tabulated, suggesting that, although the term"SIDS"itself is widely known, knowledge of all 3 risk factors for SIDS - sleeping in a prone position [75.8%], smoking during pregnancy [71.7%], and non-breastfeeding [26.8%] - remains inadequate. Additionally, 92.4% of respondents were unaware of the"SIDS Awareness Month"promoted by the Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare, suggesting that this campaign itself, central to raising awareness of SIDS, has had little effect so far.
