Description

The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of extensive reading (ER) in EFLclasses for Japanese university freshmen and to find what the tendency of the participantswas likely to make ER activities more effective. An ER program was conducted for twosemesters. None of the participants were English majors. In every lesson, the first 30minutes of the class were allocated for ER activities. The books they read were of theirown choice. The participants were strongly advised not to use dictionaries but to use inferences when they encountered unknown vocabulary during their reading. When the results of pre- and post-tests and the participants' reading records were analyzed, it was found that their scores in the vocabulary/grammar section improved significantly. Also it was found that the participants who have a higher English level tended to read larger amount of words, and that successful readers had a tendency to read easier and shorter books consistently in larger amounts. Not raising the difficulty level of the books too fast also seemed to be an important aspects towards making ER activities more effective in English studies.
