According to the news letter of the Foundation for Endangered Languages, there areagreement among linguists who have considered the situations that over half of theworld's languages are monibund, i.e. effectively being passed on the next generation(1).The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decidedto respond to this situation and recognized it as a task of great urgency. ChristopherMoseley is a general editor of the third edition of UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger. In the third edition of the Atlas, we can access online for the first time through the UNESCO website, and submit comments and suggestions for amendmentsand corrections to the more comprehensive data. On the differences between the print andonline editions, Moseley addresses the many editorial decisions and challenges. In thispaper I introduce Moseley's retrace on the Atlas back to its origins and discuss the process of expanding its coverage.
