Although marble is rarely quarried in Japan recently as building stone, several marble quarries are known to have been active in Japan until about the end of 1960's. Those marbles have been used for the interior finishing of many historic buildings in Japan, and some of them are still accessible for us to appreciate. This paper shows the results of the survey on the Japanese building stones used for the interior finishing in the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, Tokyo, Japan, which is one of the oldest department stores in Tokyo. Provenance of the building stones were identified visually and nondestructively: on-the-spot identification or identification using photographs. 10 or 11 types of stones (in product names) were identified as Japanese. Most of the identified stones were marbles and limestones except one that was serpentine. Those stones were presumably quarried in Tokushima, Kochi, Saitama, and Yamaguchi prefecuture, Japan. Department stores are frequently renovated that it was unclear what part is done when. Japanese marbles are mostly found as the floor, and around the stairs, lifts, and escalators. Stairs, lifts, and escalators have been installed before 1965, according to the architectural plan, which fits the time when Japanese marbles were quarried.
