Objective: In recent years, declines in performance during a dual task have been increasingly focused on as a cause of falls in the elderly. In this study, changes in blood concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) during single and dual tasks were measured and compared as an index of brain activation. Subjects: A total of 16 healthy male and female individuals (university students) were studied. Methods: Changes in blood concentrations of Oxy-Hb in the brain, including the prefrontal area, were measured using near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) under the following 4 conditions: Single task: 1) the Stroop test at a lower difficulty level (ST1); 2) Stroop test at a higher difficulty level (ST2): dual task: 3) barefoot walking on a treadmill at a speed of 3 km/h, while performing the Stroop test at a lower difficulty level (DT1); and 4) barefoot walking on a treadmill at a speed of 3 km/h, while performing the Stroop test at a higher difficulty level (DT2). Results: Blood concentrations of Oxy-Hb increased in the prefrontal area more markedly during the dual than the single tasks (p<0.05).
