国立科学博物館の上野俊一博士らにより、1979 年、ネパール各地で採集されたサワガニ類の標本は以下の2科3属3種に同定された:サワガニ科 Potamidae の Himalayapotamon atkinsonianum( Wood-Mason, 1871) およびTrichopotamon sikkimense (Rathbun, 1905)、Gecarcinucidae 科のMaydelliathelphusa lugubris( Wood-Mason, 1871)。いずれも既知種であるが、ネパールという土地柄、淡水産カニ類の記録回数は多くないため、これらの新たな標本を写真とともに記録することは、各種の確実で容易な同定と正確な分布域の把握のために寄与する。Maydelliathelphusa lugubris に関しては、Brandisand Sharma( 2005) に従って、著しく変異に富む多型種として扱った。

In this paper dealing with the freshwater crabs from Nepal, three species of two families, viz., Himalayapotamon atkinsonianum (Wood-Mason, 1871) and Trichopotamon sikkimense (Rathbun, 1905) of the family Potamidae, and Maydelliathelphusa lugubris (Wood-Mason, 1871) of the family Gecarcinucidae, are recorded, with some taxonomic comments and fine figures, based mainly on the specimens collected by the staff of the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo. Of the three species, Meydelliathelphusa lugubris is treated as the polytypic species following Brandis and Sharma (2005), with many synonyms.
