説明

Sleep deprivation from long-term insomnia is known to be a risk factor for various diseases. In Japan, various surveys have found a prevalence of about 20% in the general population. From personal observation, women at the university do not seem to be getting the sleep they need. The aim of this study was to 1. conduct a preliminary survey to estimate the rate of insomnia in university women and 2. to design a pilot study testing the effect of a 15-min nap on improving psychological and somatic stress indicators of nighttime insomnia. For 1, a convenience sampling of 131 university women completed the Athens Insomnia Scale survey. Pathological insomnia (>6 score) was 54% in this group, higher than that reported in earlier surveys. For 2, a subset (10 of the above group participated in a study to test the effect of a 15-min afternoon nap (14:00 to 14:15) on psychological and somatic stress indicators of insomnia (75, test group; 27, control). Napping in the test group was reported to have a beneficial effect on psychological stress but not on somatic stress indicators. For young women, a short daytime nap may reduce psychological stress and lead to better management of stress.
