Description

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the cleaning effect of bed baths using warm water with dissolved sodium bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate bed baths), and the effect of these baths on skin function. Bed baths using 1% sodium bicarbonate were performed on the backs of 11 subjects in their 20s who had healthy skin, and the oil content on the skin surface, moisture content of the stratum corneum, and skin pH were investigated, in addition to observation of flares and a subjective survey. The results showed that sodium bicarbonate bed baths removed of approximately two-thirds of the sebum from the back of the subjects. The rate of reduction in the moisture content of the stratum corneum was 20%, and the skin pH was slightly acidic. No onset of flares or itching was seen. These findings suggest that sodium bicarbonate is effective as a cleaning agent during bed baths, and does not irritate the skin.
