Abstract

This study aimed to review books on nursing techniques in Japan to clarify the content of methods and principles for the handling of patients' used injection needles and needle caps and that of injection needles and needle caps after filling with a drug solution. We also aimed to investigate the teaching of techniques to prevent pincushion wounds. In total, 27 books were reviewed. Descriptions of the handling of used needles and needle caps and that of needles and needle caps after filling with a drug solution were extracted, compiled into a table, and rendered as a diagram. Descriptions of the handling of used needles and needle caps were found in 24 books, which included 20 examples of "disposal of needles in waste receptacles without putting on a cap," three examples of "temporarily placing injection needles in a kidney dish after use and disposing of the injection needles later," and seven examples of "recapping injection needles after use." Descriptions of the handling of needles and needle caps after filling with a drug solution were found in 22 books and included 21 examples of "placing caps on injection needles," with the exception of vials. Our findings showed that definitions of "used injection needles and needle caps" are ambiguous. This suggests that an explanation of the definition for "used needles" is needed with consensus on principles to prevent pincushion wounds.
