Automobile manufacturing has long been an essential industry in Japan, and as such, automobile exports to almost every country in the world have contributed to its international trade surplus. Although this industry still upholds its important position in the Japanese economy, domestic production volumes have relatively declined due to the increase in overseas production by Japanese motor companies as well as the general trend of decline of Japan's domestic population. Located facing Ise Bay, the Nagoya port, one of the top five important ports in Japan and the closest to the country's largest automobile production area, has long served as the main automobile export port. The maximum automobile export volume in the Nagoya port was recorded just before the Lehman shock. Hereafter, automobile exports from this port was reduced by about thirty percent compared with their heyday. The Mikawa port, also located facing Ise Bay, has recently acquired recognition as the main automobile import harbor. This reflects that the automobile import business, previously conducted via the ports of Kanto area, has been relocated to this area. While considering relocation, automobile import firms evaluated the geographically central situation of this port in relation to the Japanese automobile market and the ability to acquire more land for less money, which would permit more efficient inspection of imported automobiles. Nearly half of the automobiles imported into Japan are unloaded at this port and gets inspected onsite. The recent centralization of these two ports handling automobile exports and imports now being located in the Aichi prefecture, has important implication for determining the future trends of automobile production and sale in Japan. Key words: automobile export, automobile import, firm relocation
