Abstract

Degrees of water purification were measured in cultivated rice and fallow fields. The amount of influent water into cultivated rice fields was approximately the same as that needed for irrigation during rice planting in general. The amount of influent water into the fallow fields was 3 times greater than in the cultivated rice fields. The amount of nitrogen purification in cultivated rice fields was 257 mg m sup(-2) d sup(-1), and the purification rate reached 97%. The nitrogen purification rate in fallow fields was 60%, while the amount of purification was approximately twice that of cultivated rice fields at 502 mg m sup(-2) d sup(-1). Therefore, large amounts of nitrate nitrogen are purified in fallow fields by extensive runoff water.
