Abstract

An accumulation of damage in pipe materials causes water leak accidents, which immensely affect the surroundings. Hence, developing a nondestructive method for evaluating damage characteristics in pipeline system is currently in urgent demand, as we take notice of the importance of maintaining the system. In this study, existing pipeline systems, which had rapidly deteriorated, were evaluated by the NDT (nondestructive testing) method in terms of C/S macro cell corrosion and water leak waves. C/S macro cell corrosion was detected by the electrical potential difference method, whereas the water leakage phenomenon was evaluated by the AE (acoustic emission) method. The steel pipeline system selected for the experiment was the one distinctly damaged from C/S macro cell corrosion, although it had been used for only less than ten years. The results indicated that the degree of C/S macro cell corrosion damage in steel pipeline could be quantitatively evaluated by monitoring the EDPS (Electrical potential difference between underground steel pipeline and soil condition). In addition, the findings suggested that water leakage of pipelines could be quantitatively assessed by monitoring the AE parameter.
