上越教育大学では，留学生のための特別入試のシステムはなく，大学院入学後も留学生は日本人学生と同様に扱われている。基本として研究活動に十分な日本語能力を有する者を入学対象として受け入れているため，留学生のための日本語教育の必要性を表面に打ち出していない。しかし，日常のコミュニケーションには困らないため認識しにくいが，日本人学生と比べて論文活動に支障をきたす留学生を無視すべきではない。特に，本学の留学生のための日本語教育は，アカデミック・ジャパニーズを念頭においた総合的な日本語運用能力の育成が目指されるべきであり，新たな日本語教育分野を本学の特徴として位置づけ，開発・検討すべきである。「学習者が自律的に学び主体的に生きる」ための日本語教育は，従来の日本語教育よりもより多角的な視野にたち，学習者の将来的見通しにまで踏み込んだ形での協働の構築を目指さなければならないことを提言したい。本稿では，まず，本学の留学生の抱える問題点として６つの視点を具体的な留学生の実態から考察する。その上で，それぞれの問題点に対する方策を先行研究から検討し，上記の提言を理論として裏づけるとともに，今後の授業実践の可能性について考える。さらに，アカデミック・ジャパニーズについての再考と専門日本語教育としてのアカデミック・ライティング指導とのつながりについても新たな視点を提示する。

There is no special entrance examination system for International Students in Joetsu University of Education, so International Students are treated equally as Japanese students. Basically, the university accepts students who have enough Japanese skills for research activities. This might be one of the reasons why Japanese language education for International Students has not been much emphasized. However, the fact is that most of International Students seem to have problems with writing their thesis in their non-native language, which is Japanese. Not only their Japanese language skills, but also their cultural background and past learning experiences seem to be influenced their work. Based on the above point, it is suggested that Japanese language education in our university should promote selfdirected & autonomous learning as the basis for research activities and for the students' future planning. In this paper, at first, the tendency of the problems faced by International Students will be considered. Secondly, the possible ways of solving their problems will be identified through literature review. Thirdly, the role of Academic Japanese connected with Academic Writing will be concerned from a new perspective.
