説明

The Mt. Hiuchi (2462m) is an isolated mountain from the North Alps (Hida Mountains). The Rock Ptarmigans on this mountain is the northernmost population in Japan. The distribution of territories and the number of the ptarmigans living on the mountain were examined on 23 and 24 June, 2002. A total of 8 territories were estimated. The estimated total number was 13 males and 8 females. Eight of 13 males were mated males with territory and the rest were single. The estimated number was about the same number estimated 35 years ago by Haneda et al. (1967). Why the small size population could continue so long time on the isolated mountaintop? The mechanism was discussed from the standpoints of carrying capacity, travel ability between mountains and the geographical location.
