In this study, we categorized classes as individual-sport or team-sport and examined the influences of the different sport types on students' motivation. The participants were 140 students (18-25 years old) enrolled in classes for individual-sport (aerobics and fitness training) and team-sport (basketball and handball). We used a motivation scale for exercise adherence based on self-determination theory. It was administered on the first and final day of classes. Data were analyzed with a two-way ANOVA. Intrinsic motivation and identified regulation scores for individual-sport and team-sport on the final day of classes were higher than on the first day and there was an interaction between sport types and class day. Data suggest that individual-sport participation changed the purpose of their activity.
