Description

It is well known that when tetrathiocyanomercuriate reagent is added to a solution containing some Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+, bright colored crystalline precipitates are formed. The reagent works sensitively if the solution contains a large amount of Zn2+ and a small amount of another of these ions, thus the deep colored precipitate is formed. The formed precipitates are shown to be mixed crystals of MHg(SCN)4. These MHg(SCN)4 crystals dissolve in DMF, and the DMF solutions are studied by polarography and spectrophotometry. The results show that both an individual crystal and some mixed crystals in DMF solution consist of Hg(SCN)2 and M(SCN)2 components, dissociated from MHg(SCN)4. M(SCN)2 component dissociates further into M2+ and SCN- to a small extent, and then M2+ reacts with chromophore reagents. Precipitation of a large amount of Zn2+ and a small amount of Cu2+ or Co2+ makes it possible to detect 0.05~l.Oppm Cu2+ or Co2+ in the solution, however, the determination by spectrophotometry is rather difficult because of the disturbance of a large amount of Zn2+.
