By examining previous studies on the development of athletes for global competition alongside the notes the author took while attending courses in the Netherlands, this study aims to provide insight into how programs for athlete development in Netherlands football are run. The purpose is to build a foundation for future studies concerning the development of youth football players. This study finds that the program in the Netherlands reflects the country’s culture and history. The theory regarding the development of youth football players that is said to have originated in the Netherlands has been copied by many around the world. Countries adopt this method and style it in a fashion that suits the status they are in, creating a unique system of youth athlete development that also serves as a leading indicator of the state a country or club is in.
