Abstract

Throughout his career, Nagasawa Rosetsu, like many painters of the Osaka Painting Schools, incorporated the styles of various schools into his works. Art historians have long defined Rosetsu as an artist solely of Kyoto style, but in this article, I intend to propound a new interpretation of Rosetsu's paintings in terms of his relationship with Osaka. Rosetsu, late in his career, was deeply drawn toward the expression of the spiritual and the fantastical. Certainly, one can attribute his late predisposition to his individual uniqueness; however, at the same time, the influence of his contemporaries must be considered to be an important factor. Rather than situating his works solely within the geographical and cultural boundary of Kyoto, I propose an understanding of his works as reaching across Kyoto and Osaka.
