Roald Dahl (1916~1989) edited an anthology called Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories, (1983), and in its introduction, he said only a very few good ghost stories had ever been written, and also that he himself had tried to produce a decent good one but failed. The ending of his failed work was later altered and the story is now known as The Landlady. The landlady, however, was highly acclaimed instead as a crime-mystery, non-ghost story, and received the Edgar Award in 1960. In this study, the author tries to analyse Dahl’s definition of good ghost stories and where The Landlady failed to be a good one, and in addition The Landlady’s literary values. Obviously The Landlady is one of Dahl’s masterworks and is included in many anthologies and has been dramatised at least a couple of times. The lack of a ghost in the story could be ‘a blessing in disguise’, indeed.
