Abstract

A comma-shaped bead is already seen from the first half of the Jomon period, and as for form, it is many stakes to present the character of “く” or “C”, and then it is defined as opening the hole for letting a string pass in the end. Going over the excavation range throughout the Japanese Islands, the quality of the material shows jadeite, jasper, agate, amber, glass, gold, and the ground. Moreover, as for a comma-shaped bead, a statement is seen by the “Kojiki”, the “Nihon shoki”, etc. Therefore, it is one of those to which research from the broad view exceeding the boundaries of a field is performed. Comma-shaped bead research in Japan is already done at the Edo period, and it has argued in active about the character of an origin theory or a comma-shaped bead at the beginning. However, such an argument has decreased in recent years. So, in this paper, the history of research accumulated till the present is arranged, and the use of a comma-shaped bead is actually surveyed. And ancient people performed some consideration about the meaning with which the comma-shaped bead was probably loaded.
