This paper points to various characteristics of the It is like-clause construction hitherto neglected, and clarifies its semantic and pragmatic properties. It is observed that the situation shown in the previous discourse is likened to that shown in the likeclause of the It is like-clause construction. The semantic and functional characteristics of the It is like-clause construction have been borne out by observing naturally occurring data.
