Description

“Autonomous, interactive, and deep learning” is emphasized in the new Course of Study issued from Japan’s MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). In order to respond to this policy, many elementary and junior high schools practice classes incorporating active learning. However, such a “passive” reform to active learning involves a variety of issues, such as class activities being formal and problems to solve being too simple to foster creativity. On the other hand, during the Edo period, many people throughout Japan positively enjoyed learning mathematics without being forced to do so. In this article, we would like to explore the reform of mathematics education that fosters the competence truly useful in the future society from the method of Wasan.
