Abstract

Support for foster parents has been provided in Japan, but there have been few studies on this subject. This paper investigated foster parents' concerns and what types of support are available to address them. This investigation showed that foster parents were concerned about their foster children and themselves. These concerns included common problems in general child-rearing and specific problems with foster care, such as connections with other foster parents. Foster parents have both professional and nonprofessional support. Professionals support foster parents by cognitive behavioral therapy and nonprofessionals support foster parents by attachment theory. Furthermore, this paper discusses the necessity of establishing support structures to satisfy the needs of foster parents.
