Abstract

Prenatal ultrasound examination may reveal major fetal abnormalities. These examinations have immense implications for parents. However, many prospective parents do not perceive prenatal ultrasound as a diagnostic procedure; therefore, they are poorly prepared to process any negative results. The lived experiences of fathers who confronted with unexpected findings of prenatal ultrasound are not well characterized. Furthermore, we interviewed fathers who had received unexpected fetal diagnoses on prenatal ultrasound examination of their spouses and were currently raising the affected child. The qualitative method of episode description was used to understand the experiences. The experience of Participant G suggested that it was the way of life that a man was as much as a husband as a father while praying for the safety of the wife with this child in a critical situation in the child's life by fetal arrhythmia. It was a state that participant G considered his wife and child regardless of himself even if he was under a difficult situation. It is important to consider the experience in detail for snuggling up to the parties.
