The writer found the peculier syringothyroids closely related to Syringothyris (Syringopleura) randalli SIMPSON from the lowest Carboniferous, Karaumedate formation. SIMPSON'S original specimen was described from the Corry sandstone of Pennsylvania in 1890, bearing a characteristic structure in the pedicle interior. The posterior part of its syrinx is joined with a posterior adductor process which is mainly seen in Syringopleura. Such a syringothyroid has sofar been found only in the lowest Carboniferous of Japan and Eastern America. Syringopleura seems to be related to Septosyringothyris VANDERCAMMEN, being thought to be derived from the Upper Devonian Cyrtospinfer. Syringothyris ? bifida CAMPBELL from the Kuttung bed of New South wales is also thought to be included in Syringopleura.
