Abstract

The affected fish had distended abdomens and were floating listlessly near the water surface. Internally the most characteristic symptom was the swelling of swimbladder, filled with a grayish turbid transudative fluid. The swimbladder sometimes reaches 60% of gross body weight. The fluid was found to be alkaline, its specific gravity being 1.010. Superficially other internal organs appeared normal. Although possible pathogenic, rod-shaped microorganisms were observed to be abundant in the fluid, the cause has not yet been determined. The occurrence of this disease is very rare in pond-raised rainbow trout.
