Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal semantic nature of content words found in Indian and Philippine English based on metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche in the sense used in Cognitive Linguistics. Compared to studies on phonetics and syntax in the field of World Englishes, semantic studies have been far behind. This study specifically aims to make some contribution in order to solve two problems found in World Englishes; obstacles of communication derived from differences of English varieties, and regarding non-native speakers of English as ‘incorrect’.
