Description
In May 2006, the State Council, the Cabinet of the Peopleʼs Republic of China, issued a “Comment from the State Council on Farmersʼ Labor Issues” at an organized administrative meeting, laying out guidelines for government activities to resolve rural issues. Here, the ideas, principles, and policy measures of the government are clearly shown to the rural workers. Since 2010, the average age of farmers has risen from 35.5 in 2010 to 39 in 2016, as the “aging” of farmers in China has progressed. Over the same period, the proportion of farmers over the age of 50 increased significantly from 12.9% to 19.2%. In 2016, 53.9% of farmers under the age of 40 were, down 1.3% compared to 2015. The so-called “new generation of peasant workers” born in the 1980s and beyond are becoming the mainstay of farmers. This paper examines the current situation of a new generation of farmers and the choice of employment.
