Abstract

This paper examines the changes in understanding the concept of “Chaxugeju” (Differential Mode of Association), which was brought up in 1948, and demonstrates applicabilities of this concept through the analysis of the interpersonal relationship in a “New Rural Area” that has been greatly influenced by the large-scale development. On the basis of some cases where local residents in rural areas restored interpersonal relationship affected by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam by holding various banquets, the paper illustrates, from the perspective of the locals, how such measures should strengthen the traditional idea of “Chaxugeju”. In this way, the applicabilities of the “Chaxugeju” theory lie in the fact that it can internally describe and explain the living structure of people in rural areas in China. In the future, it is expected that the elucidation of living structure characterised by "Chaxugeju" will be a research focus from a lifetheoretic approach.
