Description

This paper re-examines Winnicott's theory and practice to derive a new perspective in psychotherapy.Upon arranging Winnicott's personality theory, it is understood that his psychoanalytical theory is basedon the concept of the space holding the mind. In Winnicott's theory, this idea leads to a viewpoint thatassesses psychological development and pathology in relation to the concept of "potential space." Thesetheoretical ideas are connected clinically. In his psychoanalytical practice, Winnicott focused on whetherhis therapy room could be the holding space for his patient's mind. This idea is reflected in the way heprovided interpretations to his patients. He attempted to create a holding space for his patient's mind bywithholding his interpretations in the therapy room. To utilize Winnicott's viewpoint, the psychologicalmechanisms that deter us from creating a potential space should be considered in detail.
