本研究は絵本の絵に注目し, それが幼児の物語理解・想像力に及ぼす影響を検討した。予備実験(N=22)では5歳児の絵の選好を調査し, 5歳児が"かわいい"イメージを好むことを示した。続く第1実験(N=21)では, 絵の表現形式(かわいいイメージの絵とそうでない絵)が5歳児の物語理解や想像力(イメージ形成)に及ぼす影響を検討した。その結果, かわいいイメージの絵は幼児の想像力を抑制することが示された。第2実験(N=48)では絵の表現形式と幼児の絵の好み(その絵を好きか嫌いか)が5歳児の物語理解や想像力に及ぼす影響を検討した。その結果, 絵の表現形式と幼児の好みはいずれも物語理解に影響しないことや, 幼児の想像力が幼児の好みに関係なくかわいいイメージの絵によって抑制されることが示された。これらの結果から, 絵本の絵が幼児の物語理解ではなく, 幼児の想像力に影響することが明らかとなった。

This study focused on the picture of picture-books. Pilot study (N=22) examined 5-year old children's preference of a picture, and found they prefer the "adorable/cute (kawaii) pictures". Then, first experiment (N=21) examined whether the type of picture (the picture with adorable/cute image or not) would affect young children's story comprehension and image formation. The result showed the picture with adorable/cute image inhibits 5-year-old's imagination. Second experiment (N=48) examined whether the type of picture and the 5-year old children's preference (liking that picture vs. not liking) would affect their understanding story and imagination. Results showed both the type of picture and the young children's preference don, t affect story comprehension. On the contrary, the young children's imagination is inhibited by the type of picture with "adorable/cute" sweet image regardless of their preference. These results showed the picture of picture-book influences young children's imagination instead of their story comprehension.
