[ABSTRACT] This study aimed to perform a concept analysis in an effort to define “unlearning” using Rodgers’ evolutionary concept analysis as our method. For our database, we used 32 documents; three of these were hand-searched as subjects of the analysis that were selected from the following sources: MEDLINE, Business Source Premier, EconLit with Full Text, PsycINFO, CINAHL, CiNii, and the Japan Medical Abstracts Society website. We created coding sheets for concept attributes, antecedents, and consequences, which were then analyzed qualitatively. Our results included three categories of attributes: the unlearning subject who performed the unlearning, unlearning targets upon which unlearning was performed, and the unlearning properties, which were properties of actions. Moreover, the results included three categories of antecedents: changes in environment, expansion of range of responsibilities, and facing the problem; consequence included performance improvements. Thus, we define “unlearning” as the continuous process of discarding knowledge, techniques, values, and routines that have lost their utility because of generational or environmental changes, as well as the acquisition of new knowledge, techniques, values, and routines. Unlearning is an important concept for coping with the needs of increasingly diverse care providers amid the ever-changing state and structure of our country’s care systems.
