Abstract

The occurrence of land hernmit crabs was investigated on the Pacific coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Among seven known Japanese species, only two were recorded from Miyazaki Prefecture, Coenobita purpureus Stimpson, 1858 and C. rugosus H. Milne Edwards, 1837. These two were distinguishable by the color of ocular peduncle and the symmetry balance of the male fifth legs (gonopods). Coenobita purpureus was recorded from Kushima city, Miyazaki city and Kadogawa town. Some large females collected from Aoshima island, Miyazaki city, with more than 10 mm in shield length were ovigerous. This species thus breeds and recruits the local population in the area. On the other hand, C. rugosus was recorded only from the Honjo River esturary and the specimens were always much smaller than 10 mm in shield length. Thus, Coenobita rugosus is not thought to recruit within the area and the occurrence may be caused by the larval dispersal from the Nansei islands where the species is rather common on the coast.
