説明

This paper aims to examine the multiple interpretations invoked by the script directions painted on the vehicles on the linguistic landscape of Japanese streets. Framing the scripts on vehicles as an advertising media, this study analyzes the writing directions of scripts on a wide range of vehicles. The analysis finds that: (1) about a half of the scripts on the right side of vehicles are written in the nonnormative direction, from right to left, (2) the right-to-left writing is found in a variety of vehicles, (3) the writing direction differs between native and nonnative scripts, and (4) some scripts appear as mirror letters. The findings suggest that the writing directions serve as a contextualization cue to navigate people how to interpret them.
