Description

Inoue Koubai’s work entitled Customs of China counts three volumes. Its second volume contains “A Study of Chinese Traditional Drama” published in April 1921. Although many people think it is an original work, it is in fact a compilation of works written by Chinese and Japanese drama critics, actors, playwrights and books introducing Chinese dramas already published at that time. Therefore his work has been undervalued by researchers. However, the articles that Inoue chose to translate are of great importance for researchers in Chinese performing arts. For example, in Chinese traditional dramas, each role is associated with specific actions linked to their costume, and Inoue translated numerous details about these costumes. In the same way, the methods of training of the performers he translated allow us to see the core of Chinese dramas. He also chose articles on properties and specified how much properties and costumes are needed in each theatre company. Until now, such data is extremely rare. Inoue Koubai was a good translator of Chinese language and managed to translate in Japanese, although sometimes inappropriately, important articles on Chinese traditional dramas. I thus consider his work to being of great importance and a contribution that we need to refer to again.
