Description

[Purpose and methods:] We conducted a comprehensive study of insurance claims concerning cataract surgery and intraocular lens suturing from 2014 to 2018 based on open data from the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan( NDB), published by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. [Results:] During the 5year period, the number of claims concerning intraocular lens suturing increased by 37% from 10, 133 to 13, 898, and the percentage of total cataract surgeries increased from 0.72% to 0.94%. The percentage of outpatient operations increased for all cataract surgeries(from 50.6% to 57.0%);however, it did not change for intraocular lens suturing(from 19.5% to 20.4%). [Conclusion:] In the last 5 years, the number of cases requiring intraocular lens suturing has increased.
