Description

A. Hettner (1859~1941) is one of the most leading geographers who had a profound influence not only on German but also on Japanese geography. He was interested in the history of geographic thought and the geographic methodology from his early days of the development of his study and published many papers on these subjects in “Geogaphische Zeitschrift”. In 1927, when he was sixty-eight years old, he collected these papers and published his main work entiteled “Die Geographie, ihre Geschichte, ihr Wesen und ihre Methoden”. This book is his “Lebenswerk” and is based on his own many experiences in his long study life. Reading this book intensively, we find that there are an inconsistent and an unclear point in it. The inconsistent point is that in some cases Hettner does not distinguish his views from O. Schlüter's. Hettner was basically opposed to Schlüter's views of “Landschaftsbild”, but Hettner writes, for example, “(S. 231) Die Geographie fasst...... örtliche Verschidenheiten auf, soweit sie für die einzelnen Erdstellen wesentlich sind, d. h. in ihrem Aussehen oder in ihrem Einflusse auf andere Erscheinungen zur Geltung kommt,......”. The other unclear point is concerned with systematic geography or his “allgemeine vergleichende Länderkunde”. He distinguishes unclearly between typification of phenomena and of regions in this work. These two points in his main work are important to place his thought in the history of German geography.
