This paper is concerned with the particular dynamics of three identifiable social spaces of Okinawan social relationships. The first social space is comprised of what is known as the Shima society (cooperating rural communities) as the basis of Okinawan society. The second social space is formed by groups that have migrated from outside of Okinawa, either from other Japanese prefectures or from other countries (e.g., members of foreign merchant districts near the Kadena US military installation). The third is the social space characterized by widening connections with other areas of Japan. Both inside and outside of Okinawa prefecture, the social spaces of Okinawans have evolved to reflect the islands' increasingly complex involvement with wider society.
